ClayHouston
will host its third annual ClayHouston Festival at HCCC. Just in
time for the holiday season, this year’s festival presents a great
opportunity for visitors to purchase handmade gifts for family and friends
and for themselves directly from the artists who made them. There will be
plenty of mugs and cups, cereal bowls and serving bowls, teapots and
pitchers, vases and cookie jars, plus unique vessel, figurative, and
abstract sculptures. Prices will range from ten dollars to several hundred
dollars.
“The ClayHouston Festival is an art festival devoted
solely to clay,” said Betsy Evans, head of the Festival steering
committee. “Our Festival allows the public to experience the special
talents and artistic visions of some of the outstanding clay artists from
Houston and the area around us. Not only can they explore and purchase
outstanding clay pieces, they can also learn how clay artists turn soft,
pliable clay into solid finished objects. In addition, five guest artists
will demonstrate and talk about how they work. A couple will use the
potters wheel, another will demonstrate handbuilding with slabs, another
will be decorating, another sculpting. Typically, these demonstrations are
standing-room-only.”
The 18 artists who will be exhibiting and
selling their works were selected by internationally-known Austin studio
artist, Lisa Orr. “What an honor it was to be asked to jury this show,”
said Lisa Orr. “The range of processes, techniques and ideas presented is
indicative of the breadth, variety, and passion in the ceramic world
today. What I looked for was a combination of three things: technical
mastery of the material and process, consistency across the grouping
submitted, and the quality of the inquiry or idea.”
Children can
make a holiday gift or just explore their own interest in clay at the
Kids’ Table. Clay will be provided and experienced clay artists will be on
hand to help the children work with the clay. Discounts will be available
for parents who wish to have their children’s pieces fired in a kiln at
one of Houston’s clay studios.
