Please join HCCC for HANDS-ON HOUSTON on Saturday, April 5th. This month, the Houston Bead Society will lead a fun activity highlighting South African Zulu traditional beadwork. Visitors will learn to make a charm or bracelet, patterned in traditional shapes and customary bead colors. Houston Bead Society members will also demonstrate the making of Zulu “Love Beads,” which inspired the activity, and describe the significance of the bead colors.

HCCC also welcomes local artist, Selven O’Keef Jarmon, who will provide additional information about the beading culture in South Africa and talk about his upcoming public art installation, “360 Degrees Vanishing.” His project is informed by South African beadwork and will be mounted on the exterior walls of Art League Houston beginning July, 2014. The installation will remain on view for a year.

HANDS-ON HOUSTON is a free craft-activity open house on the first Saturday of every month. Each month, a teaching artist demonstrates a craft related to the current exhibitions. Families and children of all ages are welcome, and materials are provided. This program supports HCCC’s mission to advance education about the process, product and history of craft. More information at www.crafthoustodev.wpenginepowered.com.

The activity for May 3, 2014 will be announced soon! If you’d like to receive this information right in your inbox when it becomes available, please sign up to receive our E-Newsletter.
