Please join HCCC current resident artist, Madison Creech, staff and volunteers to create luminous silk paintings inspired by the works on view in A View Within. Learn how to use a Gutta resist to create a pattern on silk. Paint on colorful dye and watch as it soaks into the silk around your pattern. Take inspiration from the works of Paula Chung and Karen Rips, who created the textiles in A View Within based upon images from x-rays, MRIs, and other diagnostic imaging.  This process references the soy-wax resist and dye-painting technique used by Karen Rips, and the use of silk in the works by Paula Chung.

Before or after the activity, stroll through the galleries, and check out the other two exhibitions on view, Charlotte Potter: Glass Armory and In Residence.  Don’t forget to stop by the Craft Garden, where you’ll see samples of plants used in the fiber arts in full bloom.

Note: Please allow 25 minutes to complete this activity. The activity will take place indoors and is on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last. No supplies will be handed out after 2:30 PM.

HANDS-ON HOUSTON is a free drop-in event held the first Saturday of every month. Each month, a teaching artist demonstrates a craft related to the current exhibitions. Families and children of all ages are welcome to come any time between 11 AM and 3 PM and participate in a 15-20 minute activity. Materials are provided. This program supports HCCC’s mission to advance education about the process, product and history of craft. More information at https://crafthouston.org/learn/education-overview/.
