¿Herramienta utilitaria u objeto ornamental?

El Houston Center for Contemporary Craft (HCCC) presenta The Ornamental Plumb Bob, una exposición individual de objetos y broches creados por el orfebre de San Antonio Gary Schott. Partiendo de su serie de broches de 2011, el nuevo cuerpo de trabajo de Schott continúa explorando la plomada, una herramienta utilizada por muchos artesanos para marcar una línea vertical de referencia.

Históricamente los artesanos de Europa, Norte América y el Medio Oriente han diseñado una amplia gama de plomadas elaboradas y únicas. Mucho antes de la era de los gremios, las plomadas se creaban en diferentes tamaños, materiales y formas, desde diseños de frutas hasta diseños náuticos. Basándose en la identificación de materiales y formas, los coleccionistas han podido trazar las plomadas a la época y región donde fueron creadas. Las obras de Gary Schott  son una extensión de esta tradición inmemorable.
