Join HCCC for our summer Craft Social to explore the art of basketry, inspired by our summer exhibition, Rooted, Revived, Reinvented:  Basketry in America.

This month, we’ll learn how to make baskets using plaiting and coiling methods.  In plaiting, two elements are woven over and under each other at right angles, while coiling uses spiral rounds of fibers to build a basket.

The evening will also include brief tours by HCCC Curator Kathryn Hall, who will point out some highlights of the basketry exhibition in the galleries, and HCCC Volunteer Sandi Elsik, who will give an overview of some of the plants currently growing in the Craft Garden that are often used in basketry.

New Schedule for Craft Social Events
Craft Social events have moved to a new quarterly schedule.  Attendees can expect the same level of creativity, experimentation, and fun to which they’ve become accustomed, and events will include a more robust menu of experiences, including hands-on making, talks and presentations from community experts, and in-depth looks at current exhibitions.  Future events will take place in October, January, April, and July, and the hours will be 5:30 – 8:00 PM for each event.

Craft Socials are casual evening events designed to emphasize experimentation, curiosity, and innovation. Visitors are encouraged to drop by and participate. All events are free and on a first-come first-served basis. Capacity is limited. Craft beer is generously provided by Buffalo Bayou Brewing Co., and materials are sponsored by Art Supply on Main Street.
