Join Houston Center for Contemporary Craft for Craft Social, a night of making and exploring contemporary craft over conversation and refreshments.

This month, we’ll explore nontraditional design in art, inspired by the furniture on view in our current exhibition, Annie Evelyn: Multiple Impressions. Grab a friend or two, and test your design skills by working in a team of up to four people to create a small structure using unconventional materials. Get creative, and learn how to problem-solve weight-baring and structural issues. The most successful design will win a prize consisting of four late-night tickets to our upcoming fundraiser, Martini Madness!

Marshall Whitney and other volunteers from TXRX Labs will join us for the event and lead a presentation on how to make furniture with minimal tools and supplies.  You’ll also discover how artists challenge themselves through playful making by viewing video clips of Annie Evelyn’s Table Fights, a furniture-performance event.

TXRX Labs is a nonprofit co-working and education hub serving the creative community of Houston, Texas. They offer classes on a variety of topics–welding, machining, woodworking, ceramics, and DIY electronics. Their 40,000-square-foot facility provides a space in which Houstonians can gather, discuss, learn, make and teach.

Craft Social takes place on the third Thursday evening of each month and is a fun way for adults to explore contemporary craft through other disciplines and media.  These casual, social events emphasize experimentation, curiosity, and innovation. Visitors are encouraged to drop by and participate. All events are free and on a first-come first-served basis. Capacity is limited.
